What Are the Different Types of Headaches and How Do They Manifest Themselves?
Before we learn about how acupuncture is being used to treat headaches, let’s first learn about the different types of headaches. Headaches are a prevalent ailment. One in 20 American adults experiences them daily, with one in seven suffering from daily migraines. The three primary headaches are migraine, cervicogenic headaches (from the neck), and myofascial headaches (muscular).
Migraines are intense headaches that begin around the temples, forehead, or eyes. They can last from hours to days. Neck pain and tight muscle headaches often originate from neck or back tightness.
Alternative treatments for headaches are gaining popularity, including acupuncture. If you’re wondering how acupuncture is being used to treat headaches, contact Upstate Spine & Sport at (864) 400-8005 or schedule an appointment here.
How Acupuncture Is Being Used to Treat Headaches
Acupuncture is a nearly 2,500-year-old system based on Ancient Eastern medical practices. While now adapted to Western medicine, the evidence of this holistic treatment’s success highlights its ability to provide long-term relief for headaches.
Besides headaches, acupuncture can treat many other chronic pain conditions. It can even alleviate mental health issues or hard-to-treat problems such as insomnia.
Acupuncture needles are less than 1/10th the size of sewing needles and are the primary tool used in the technique. Inserting these needles in specific points signals the brain to increase blood flow. The immune and nervous systems activate as well, relieving inflammation and pain throughout the body.
Studies have shown that treating headaches with acupuncture by targeting critical areas is more effective than over-the-counter medications and far less invasive. By increasing blood flow and immune system function, acupuncture provides longer-term relief. It can even decrease the severity of future headaches.

Speak with Your Doctor If You’re Experiencing Regular Headaches
At our clinic, we can help guide you in determining if you should see your primary care physician. No referral is necessary to see any of our providers.
While the causes of most headaches are common, they sometimes suggest more severe issues requiring medical attention. Your doctor may also want to draw labs or order imaging.
Inflammation in the brain’s blood vessels, head trauma, and brain tumors are some of the more serious causes of headaches. Since any of these conditions can be life-threatening, a medical professional would guide you. Acupuncture won’t resolve these headaches as they might require surgery or other more invasive, involved procedures.
