A Story That Shapes the Way We Care

Trust starts with understanding why we do this work. Fran Jolson, one of our licensed acupuncturists, found this path through her own struggles.

For years, Fran dealt with stress, anxiety, menstrual cycle irregularity, and digestive issues. She visited doctor after doctor, only to leave with more questions than answers and a nagging feeling that medication might be her only choice. Acupuncture changed that. It eased her symptoms, restored her balance, and eventually inspired her to go back to school and become a practitioner herself. That whole-person experience is why she looks beyond a single symptom and cares for how stress, digestion, hormones, and your cycle all connect.

Her passion for fertility grew from an even more personal place. While building her family, Fran experienced miscarriages. She knew acupuncture had helped her, and she wanted to learn everything she could about how it might support other women on the same journey. That experience shaped the compassionate, honest care she offers today, and it’s why getting to know each patient and helping her feel her best is the part of this work Fran loves most.

How We Fit Into Your Bigger Picture of Care

Greenville is rich with wonderful women’s health resources. Many local options focus on OB-GYN visits, hospital-based services, or counseling support, and each plays an important role. What women often tell us they’re missing is whole-body, integrative care that complements those services in one welcoming place.

That’s where we come in. We don’t replace your OB-GYN, reproductive endocrinologist, or therapist. We work alongside them. In fact, Fran is the first to say she values medication and Western medicine, and she’s far from against them. Most of her patients take some form of medication while adding acupuncture, healthy choices, and other supportive care.

Fran is also honest about her own limits. She isn’t the end-all resource for everything, and she’s glad to connect you with trusted experts when a question falls outside her scope. If you haven’t established care with an OB, a reproductive endocrinologist, or a primary care doctor yet, that’s often her very first suggestion. Our role is to support your nervous system, comfort, and reproductive wellness while your medical team handles diagnosis and treatment. Our team also co-manages care across acupuncture, chiropractic and integrative services, and massage therapy, so you feel supported from every angle.

What the Evidence Actually Says

We believe in honest, careful information. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years, and modern research helps us understand where it fits.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, acupuncture is widely used and generally considered safe when performed by trained, licensed practitioners. Research supports its role in easing certain types of pain and some symptoms, and many women find it helps them feel calmer and more balanced during a stressful season.

We’ll always be straight with you about the limits, too. NCCIH notes that evidence for acupuncture improving IVF success is mixed, and a 2021 review found no difference between acupuncture and sham acupuncture for IVF pregnancy or live birth rates. So we frame acupuncture as support for stress regulation, comfort, circulation, and whole-person wellness, never as a guarantee of conception.

How Acupuncture May Support Your Body

Acupuncture is layered, but the way Fran explains it is simple. Tiny, hair-thin needles encourage your body’s natural systems to work better together.

Acupuncture may help in several ways:

  • Increasing blood flow to your reproductive organs
  • Reducing inflammation throughout the body
  • Down-regulating your nervous system to ease stress
  • Supporting overall hormonal balance
  • Helping with stress reduction during a demanding season
  • Supporting cervical mucus, which plays a role in fertility

Cupping adds gentle suction that eases muscle tension and supports relaxation. Together, these techniques create a calming, restorative experience tailored to you. We never use a one-size-fits-all approach, so your practitioner chooses what fits your body that day. More and more research continues to explore these benefits, and we’ll always share what we know honestly.

How These Therapies Fit Into Your Plan

Your Goal or Concern How Acupuncture and Cupping May Fit When Co-Management or Added Evaluation May Matter
Trying to conceive May support stress regulation, relaxation, and circulation through your cycle Pair with your OB-GYN or fertility specialist, especially around IVF or IUI timing
Irregular or painful cycles May ease tension and support overall comfort and balance Persistent or severe symptoms deserve a medical workup for PCOS, endometriosis, or other causes
Hormone balance Supports relaxation and whole-person wellness, plus lifestyle guidance Lab testing and medical management belong with your physician
Pregnancy comfort May ease nausea and common pregnancy-related discomfort with gentle, stage-appropriate care Always coordinate with your prenatal provider
Postpartum recovery Supports rest, recovery, and emotional well-being Add pelvic floor physical therapy for core, bladder, or pain concerns

These therapies support your wellness journey. They aren’t a substitute for medical care, and we’ll always tell you when something deserves a closer look.

What to Expect at Your First Visit to Upstate Spine & Sport

Walking into a new clinic can feel uncertain, especially when fertility advice feels like a flood of conflicting information and your medical appointments move quickly. We make your first visit simple and reassuring from the moment you arrive.

We start with an unhurried conversation about your health history, lifestyle, cycle, and goals. You set the pace, and you never have to explain yourself twice. Since our appointments allow more time than a rushed medical visit, we can help you make sense of everything you’ve gathered, sort through what matters, and make sure you feel truly heard.

Your comfort matters to us. Our treatment rooms are cozy and calming, with thoughtful touches like a bed warmer, a feet warmer, soft music, and a diffuser. Most visits last about an hour, and treatment often begins the same day. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a list of any medications or supplements, and share details about care from your OB-GYN or fertility team so we can coordinate well.

Before you go, you’ll have a clear, personalized plan and a sense of what comes next. No guesswork, no pressure.

What Acupuncture Actually Feels Like

Needle worries are common, and we take them seriously. Acupuncture shouldn’t be painful. You might feel sensations like aching, pulsing, or pulling, and those are completely normal.

What isn’t normal is sharp, shooting, or electrical pain. If you ever feel that, tell us right away. Fran and our team has worked hard to find a gentle needling technique that stays comfortable while still doing its job. We always listen to you and adjust along the way.

Meet the Team Behind Your Care

Trust starts with knowing who’s in the room with you. Our licensed acupuncturists bring real expertise in women’s reproductive health.

Fran Jolson, L.Ac is a Greenville native and Wake Forest University graduate who earned her Master of Science in Acupuncture as valedictorian of National University near Chicago. Her practice centers on women’s health, fertility, hormone balance, and emotional well-being, including support alongside IVF and IUI, irregular cycles, pregnancy care, and postpartum recovery. She also helps with related whole-person concerns like anxiety, headaches, pain, and digestive issues.

Fran is part of an ongoing mentorship with Laura Ehrlich, a respected California practitioner, focused on the Western medical perspective of fertility care and how acupuncture can complement the work of reproductive endocrinologists. She tends to talk with patients about supplements, and when something falls outside her scope, she’ll happily connect you with trusted resources who can help.

Christina Thomason, L.Ac brings a rich background as a nurse and bodywork therapist. She earned her Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine from Pacific College of Health and Science. Christina knows Chinese herbs well, so if you’re curious about that option, she’s a wonderful resource.

Our team frequently co-manages patients across disciplines, so you get coordinated, whole-body support. Learn more about everyone on our clinic team page, or explore our acupuncture services in Greenville.

Frequently Asked Questions About Women’s Health and Fertility Support

Can Acupuncture Help With Fertility?

Many women use acupuncture to support stress regulation, comfort, and circulation during their fertility journey. We’ll build a plan around your goals while being honest about what acupuncture can and can’t do.

How Often Should I Get Acupuncture for Fertility Support?

It depends on your goals, your cycle, and any treatment timeline you’re following. Many women start with weekly sessions, then adjust as we track progress. We’ll recommend a rhythm that fits your body and your schedule during your first visit.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

It shouldn’t. You might feel sensations like aching, pulsing, or pulling, and those are normal. Sharp, shooting, or electrical pain is not, so tell us if you feel it. Fran and the team uses a gentle technique designed to stay comfortable while still being effective.

Can Acupuncture Support PCOS Symptoms?

Some women find acupuncture helps them feel calmer and more balanced while managing PCOS. It isn’t a cure, and PCOS needs medical diagnosis and management with your physician. We’re glad to support your comfort and well-being alongside that care.

Can I Get Acupuncture During Pregnancy?

Yes, many women use gentle, stage-appropriate acupuncture to ease nausea and common pregnancy-related discomfort. We can also help with labor preparation and breech support, always coordinating with your prenatal provider.

Does This Replace My OB-GYN or Fertility Doctor?

No. We work alongside your OB-GYN, reproductive endocrinologist, or therapist, never in place of them. If you haven’t established medical care yet, that’s often our first recommendation. Your medical team handles diagnosis and treatment, while we support your comfort and whole-person wellness.

What Should I Expect After a Session?

Most women feel relaxed and calm, and some notice better sleep or eased tension. Cupping may leave temporary circular marks that fade within a few days. We’ll review how you feel and fine-tune your plan as we go.

Where Are You Located, and Who Do You Serve?

We’re at 1000 Laurens Rd., Suite A, in Greenville, South Carolina, near Verdae. We proudly serve women across Greenville, Simpsonville, Greer, Five Forks, and the wider Upstate.
